I love new clients and especially clients who have never used a travel advisor before!
As a travel advisor who plans countless European trips, I often hear from clients that they’d love to stay at top-tier luxury hotels like InterContinental properties — but assume the cost will be out of reach. The good news? It depends heavily on where in Europe you go.
I recently searched for premium rooms at InterContinental hotels in several popular cities for the first week of August 2026. I chose the same room category and the same "Flexible" price, ignoring any special member pricing or sales that might make a difference. I wanted as much of an "apples to apples" comparison as possible. The differences in prices were actually kind of shocking. Keep reading for the breakdown.
InterContinental hotels by IHG are generally considered to be 5-star hotels in most cities. They aren't going to necessarily be full of local flavor, but they have nice rooms that are often pretty large by local standards and are in great locations - often right in the middle of a city. We stayed in the InterContinental in Ljubljana in March and are booked at the InterContinental in Warsaw in September. I've stayed in the InterContinental at the O2 in Greenwich (London) and I've put clients in the InterContinental in London on Park Lane and they loved it. It is a solid brand that doesn't disappoint. I have special exclusive perks for clients at some properties because they are part of my luxury hotel group and I love using them.

The price differences between Western Europe and Central/Eastern Europe are striking.
The Numbers Speak for Themselves
Western Europe (Higher Cost Tier):
London (InterContinental London Park Lane): $869 per night
Paris (InterContinental Paris Le Grand): $903 per night
Amsterdam: $1,077 per night

Now, take a look at the InterContinental hotels a little farther east.
Central & Eastern Europe (Remarkable Value):
Budapest: $362 per night
Ljubljana: $449 per night
Warsaw: $257 per night (WOW!) 🤯

The Savings Breakdown
The average nightly rate for the three Western cities is approximately $950. The average for the three Central/Eastern cities is approximately $356.
That’s an average savings of nearly $594 per night — or roughly 60% less when you head farther east. Over a 7-night stay, this can translate to thousands of dollars in savings without sacrificing luxury.

InterContinental hotels are part of the prestigious IHG collection and consistently earn high ratings for their elegant design, excellent service, prime locations, and upscale amenities. Most travelers love the comfortable beds, quality restaurants, fitness centers, and attentive staff. Whether you’re in a grand historic property in Paris or a sleek modern tower in Warsaw, you’re getting a true 5-star experience.
Why the Big Price Gap?
Western capitals like London, Paris, and Amsterdam command premium prices due to intense demand, limited real estate, and their status as must-visit bucket-list destinations. Moving east into Central and Eastern Europe, you’ll find equally impressive InterContinental properties where your dollar stretches significantly further. This allows travelers to enjoy luxury accommodations, often with upgrades or longer stays, at a fraction of the cost.
Cities like Budapest, Ljubljana, and Warsaw deliver incredible value: world-class architecture, rich history, vibrant culture, and outstanding cuisine — all paired with more affordable luxury lodging. It’s a smart way to experience Europe’s diversity while keeping your budget balanced.
These types of savings aren't unique to the InterContinental brand. I just used it as an example because the brand is found in so many cities across Europe and usually in a prime location for tourists. This savings can translate to any other hotel in a similar category. Your money will just go farther the farther east you travel.
This also translates in other trip costs. Food (outside of the touristy areas) will be cheaper. Sometimes entry fees for historical sites are cheaper. Gas was cheaper in Slovenia than it was when we crossed the border to Italy. Gas in Denmark was ridiculously high compared to Budapest. Car rentals were cheaper, usually, too. Suddenly your "moderate" vacation budget goes farther when you head to some of the less touristed areas of Europe. Suddenly, your "moderate" vacation budget that didn't go very far in Paris has you traveling like posh people in Poland.
Why This Matters for Your Trip
Whether you’re planning a multi-city European adventure or focusing on one region, mixing Western icons with Central/Eastern gems is a winning strategy. You can enjoy iconic sights in London or Paris and then treat yourself to elevated stays in Warsaw or Budapest without breaking the bank. A flight from Paris to Warsaw is 2 hours and 10 minutes. Stop in Paris for a few days and stay at the 3-star hotel for the same price you can stay at a 5-star in Warsaw. It's a rags-to-riches trip!
